This is my most recent and longest edited fiction film; my graduation film, Elsewhere. In this film, I undertook the challenge of blending representations of reality and dream, where I also engaged in visual effects. Within Elsewhere's dream sequences I tried to draw out actor performances (using this as a guide as to where in the footage to cut to the consequent shot) as clues to the narrative as it starts to unravel and reveal itself.

The editing in this film required a visual representation and construction of a never-ending cycle to indicate a never-ending punishment. When planning the editing of this film I decided to 1) acknowledge the character dynamics between each character, and 2) use this knowledge to deliver to audiences who has the most physical and/or emotional power of each scene. This is a practice I try to incorporate and consider when editing all of my creative projects, as it helps to understand which character audiences need to be "looking at" in each scene.

This was the first film I edited that incorporated elements of magical fantasy, tactically presenting clues within the sequence that things are not what they seem on the surface. The protagonist of this film is turning into a vampire. So my role in this film involved carefully laying out clues (such as with the image of her reflection) while simultaneously demonstrating her feelings of distraught through the construction of the sequence.

While it is a short piece, this is one that the crew and I dedicated time and effort to develop. We were a group of four who came together to create this CineHaiku, which had to engage with themes of landscape, and so we linked it to ideas of Greek mythology and mother nature. The editing in this short sequence required delicate attention to how to construct tension within 30 seconds in a non-jarring way. We had individual roles on this project, however, we all took key roles in the creative developments of our ideas.

This project is one of my proudest and most difficult feats, having completed it as a small crew of two, and completely remotely at the peak of Covid. I would send cuts to the director, and receive feedback on the phone, where we would talk for hours on end about narrative ideas and parts that still required work. Having dedicated my personal feelings of belonging as a subject matter of this film, it became very personal and was a very gratifying project to complete.

As part of our documentary module, we participated in Docma, where we were provided with a theme and a brief. I was given 'flour', and single-take, and had to consider how I could make this visually striking and entertaining. I first identified an emotional link to the word, I then attempted to construct a visual representation of it that I furthered with light visual effects.

The editing of this film needed to further the construction of mental space, positioning audiences entirely within the protagonist's mind. In this space, we had to face creative limitations of what could and could not be shot and how to cut with this excitingly. In addition, I performed light visual effects, such as the removal of the camera crew's reflection in close-up shots of eyes and the insertion of a reflection on a camera lens.

This film follows 'the last survivor of the apocalypse' as they deal with their loneliness and search for parts to rebuild a cassette player. Being one of my older examples of work, there are clear weaknesses in the editing, such as the inclusion of action that may not be needed. For example, when they are climbing up the hill, there are two shots that feature this action and then a jump cut, which further proves that only one shot would have sufficed. In avoiding shots of such, more running time could have been dedicated to areas of the narrative that deserve it.

This is one of the first films I worked on at University, where I engaged with other craft roles such as cinematography. Following our assessment brief, we were to engage with two or more characters that share a conversation in a single location. As the characters were to be sat down, I felt limited as to what I could shoot or where I could cut between each shot. I believe that the editing in this film when compared to the most recent, shows how far I have come as an editor and filmmaker.
